Both teams had encountered strong opposition in the previous rounds to make the Final. In particular, Haslemere defeated Rosslyn Park 2s and Reeds Bs.
Haslemere were keen to get off to a flying start and early pressure was rewarded with an early penalty converted by Joe Brockhurst and a try in the corner scored by Stuart Davidson. Esher are a physical side and so, tried to respond through their Forwards going through the phases, but Haslemere’s defence was incredibly strong. After enduring continued pressure, Haslemere began to retain some possession through their Forwards which led to an opportunities for the Backs. After some slick handling, the ball made it’s way to Max Lee who scored in the other corner. Half time score was 13-0.
After the break, it was clear that Esher would throw everything into the game, but yet again Haslemere’s ability to win the ball at the breakdown led to a fine counter-attacking run by Fullback Toby Pickford who made a perfect pass to Arthur Moores who ran half the pitch to score under the posts early in the second half. A conversion made it 20-0.
However, Esher were determined to score and were justly rewarded after finely breaking through a very resilient Haslemere defence to make the final score 20-7.
Afterwards, Haslemere’s Captain, Paddy King said “we won this Cup as a result of a lot of hard work by everyone involved and building a fantastic team spirit. I’m very proud of the boys”.
